The raid on the town of La Pampa, in Peru's southeastern region of Madre de Dios, saw the destruction of hundreds of homes, shops, nightclubs and even brothels. It came as part of a government crackdown on illegal mining, which has drawn hundreds of thousands of workers to the region and destroyed 60,000 hectares of land in the last decade. No one realised how severe the damage was until a U.S.-Peruvian report released in 2013. The government has vowed to eradicate deforestation in Peru by 2021.
