Concussion is an injury to the brain. Some people refer to concussion as a "bruise on the brain" but this is inaccurate. The term bruise suggests that a concussion is something that can be seen on an imaging study and in fact this injury cannot be seen on CT scan or MRI. It involves an injury at the cellular level and cannot be seen on any type of imaging scan.
Patients who have a head injury and then end up with a concussion do not need to have loss of consciousness associated with the injury and only 10% of concussed athletes suffer an injury that causes loss of consciousness.
The symptoms that players will have if they have concussion are immediate symptoms and they include Headache, Dizziness, Loss of memory or a generalized "foggy" type feeling.
