Chania (Χανιά)
is the second largest city of Crete and the capital of the Chania regional unit.
It lies along the north coast of the island, about 70 km (43 mi) west of Rethymno and 145 km (90 mi) west of Heraklion.

Despite being bombed in World War II, Chania is considered the most beautiful city in Crete, especially its 15th century Venetian port and lighthouse. Many of the old buildings have been restored as hotels, shops and bars.

In recent years the city has become a highly sought after tourist destination. The city has several interesting museums and buildings. Mention should be made of the archaeological museum, the naval museum and the Greek school museum. In 1913 the market building was opened, based on the Marseille market.
