This video was made to document and demonstrate the sound textures produced by two 4” chimes made by Paiste, as hi-hat cymbals. Their sound is piercing but not painful so. Other than an effect used sparingly, it’s not as versatile as a pair of normal sized hats. But since I used 10” Wuhan splashes as hi-hats for a scaled down kit a few years back, I wanted to see (and hear) for myself if going smaller would be practical. I mean, it does work. But it is not something that would work at a typical rock gig to substitute for 14” hats! Heh.
But it has some interesting sonic textures that could lend itself to cajon work or perhaps darbuka or dhumbek rhythms for bellydance accompaniment.
Anyways, in case you ever wanted to know how they would sound, here you go!
