The Multi Campus Module Coastal and River Engineering is a 6 ECTS course at KU Leuven campus Bruges.
This module will guide you through the maze of water bound infrastructure, erected offshore, in the coastal area or inland. In a number of introductory lessons, the theoretical basis of currents and waves in rivers and at sea is reviewed. A thorough understanding of the basic principles is essential for a good design of structures to withstand severe hydrodynamic loads.
As the module continues, guest lecturers reveal the practical aspects of river and coastal engineering. Experts affiliated to the large civil construction and dredging firms and consultancy companies convey by means of many real life examples, how to design quay walls and locks, to construct breakwaters, to drive sheet piles or to build offshore platforms. Furthermore, they give advise on how to deal with the harsh and unsure conditions at sea.
In the project, it is up to you. You will receive an authentic design task, which you will perform together with last year civil engineering students. Together, you make a small consultancy firm, charged with the design of a preliminary concept about an actual topic on water bound infrastructure. During this process, you will be guided by professors, scientists and engineers working with government, consultancy firms, large construction companies,... You are expected for a kick-off meeting in Ostend, after which your team continues the drafting of a design during meetings and feedback sessions facilitated in Ghent. By the end of the semester you will defend your concept in Leuven for a professional jury.
