Two of my recent purchases were in the peaty 'soil' that can, I find, be very difficult to water properly in my conditions. Like moss, it's very, very easy to get it too wet and kill the roots and it's tricky to work out whether the bottom of the pot is as dry as the top. The Oncidium sotoanum I bought from the OSGB stand at RHS Chelsea on 22nd September 2021 needed repotting for the above reasons but all the more so because it was very loose and at risk of toppling.
I was surprised that the no-ID xVuylstekeara had a great root system despit it being quite wet lower down but I later found out that it includes Odontoglossum in its make-up so the moisture tolerance probably comes from that side of things. Here's a link to an article about this intergeneric:
