In todays episode I show you how to plant winter onions for a successful harvest in spring. Overwintering onions is a great idea if you have that extra space over winter that you just don't need. The success rate I find is about 80% good harvest, but I find its a great way of having some fresh onions in spring. You can also pull them through winter and use as spring onions! I also measure the polytunnel as it's due a refit in spring! New cover. I'll show you how to fit a polytunnel cover and how to add staging and two new doors. A double door at the front and a single door at the back. All for good ventilation. The onion bed was dug and rakes then finished with some first Tunnels hoops & a net to protect those little onions from birds. They won't eat the bulb but they will think the tiny shoots are worms and pull them out of the bed. Cover those onions! The Grapevine Allotment garden also had a bed cleared ready for some more winter brassicas. Autumn and winter is a perfect time to prepare beds, feed your beds and also grow some delicious Hardy produce to use in those colder months such as stews & casseroles. Delicious !
