Notes from Thomas about this arrangement:
Forests are such a common and important locale in the Zelda series that at one point I considered an entire “Zelda Forests Suite” covering everything from A Link to the Past's Lost Woods, Link's Awakening's Mysterious Woods, and Breath of the Wild's Korok Forest. For some reason or another (probably licensing, as is often the case), this idea get dropped. Guess we’ll just have to settle for a Donkey Kong nature suite!
This piece is an important addition to Brassroots for its bouncy and upbeat feel, where so many other forest pieces tend to lean contemplative. We spend much of the arrangement leaning into this, including a half-time feel version near the end. But the middle section of this arrangement moves into something a bit more mysterious: the Forest Temple theme. The dungeon music in Ocarina of Time is infamously ambient and minimalist and doesn’t usually lend itself all that well to instrumental adaptation. In this case it’s used as a background texture to begin introducing the next piece represented in this arrangement: Saria’s Theme (or the Lost Woods). A not insignificant amount of influence was had from the 2018 orchestration of this theme that can be heard on the “Ocarina Medley” - check out the end of this if you haven't heard it!
Ultimately, this arrangement ended up being representative of the entire forest-themed section of Ocarina of Time, not just Kokiri Forest, but the Lost Woods and Forest Temple.
