Need for export of wool led to birth of Vizag Port in 1933

Visakhapatnam Port, which was thrown open to ocean traffic exactly 85 years ago, was established by the British rulers to meet the demand for export of wool, manganese and other products.

To meet growing demand for wool, the erstwhile East India Company had established several factories to produce long and neck cloth across the Coromandel Coast. Manganese ore was also used to be exported to the U.K. and the U.S. Oil seeds, jaggery, hides and skin, jute and indigo were in demand too. Cotton twist and yard for use of handloom weavers used to be imported.
