Thousands of mourners paid their respects at a Baltimore, Maryland church for the funeral service of Freddie Gray.
Gray died after suffering a critical spinal injury while he was in police custody. His death has prompted numerous marches and rallies for more than a week across Maryland.
Just before the start of the service, members of the Gray family gathered in front of the casket, overcome with emotion.
Speakers at the funeral included well-known area lawyer William "Billy" Murphy Jr. who said the 'eyes of the country' are watching Baltimore to see how the city handles the most recent police-related death of an African American citizen.
Congressman Elijah Cummings also addressed the church service in an emotional speech on the death of Gray who died at the age of 25.
Civil rights activist the Reverend Jesse Jackson echoed similar sentiments, calling Gray a 'martyr' for the community.
Six Baltimore police officers involved in Gray's arrest have been suspended during the investigation into the exact cause of his death.
