The all-new Passat Variant by Volkswagen is set to make its debut at the IAA Mobility in Munich in September 2023, with sales starting in the first quarter of 2024. This ninth-generation Passat is the first Volkswagen based on the MQB evo platform and aims to set new standards in design, quality, and technology. The vehicle will feature a range of new plug-in hybrid drives with all-electric ranges of around 100 km, as well as DC fast charging capabilities. The new cockpit is designed with large displays and an intuitive menu structure, developed in response to customer feedback.
The Passat Variant offers high travel comfort, thanks to generous space, effective noise insulation, new seats, and optional adaptive chassis control known as DCC Pro. Celebrating its 50th anniversary, the Passat has sold more than 34 million units worldwide, making it the second top-selling Volkswagen model after the Golf. The new design is described as clean and powerful, maintaining the essence of the Passat and Volkswagen brand while introducing new elements.
The vehicle will also feature a range of new plug-in and mild hybrid drives, including two completely new plug-in hybrid drives with a system output of 150 kW and 200 kW. These new drives, in combination with a new 19.7 kWh battery, make all-electric ranges of around 100 km possible. The Passat will also be available with a 48 V mild hybrid drive and a range of turbo petrol and turbo diesel engines, all equipped with an automatic direct shift gearbox (DSG).
The interior has been completely redesigned, featuring a large display landscape that is stylish, functional, and progressive. The latest generation of the modular infotainment matrix, known as MIB4, enables intuitive operation. The adaptive chassis control DCC Pro represents a new level of running gear technology, setting benchmarks in the mid-sized class. The newly developed ergoActive Plus seats offer high travel comfort with a pneumatic 10-chamber pressure point massage function.
Thanks to a 50 mm longer wheelbase and 50 mm more legroom in the rear, along with a luggage compartment capacity of up to 1,920 liters, the Passat Variant is well-suited for both business and leisure. The vehicle aims to blur the lines between classes, offering a high-quality experience that challenges the boundaries of its segment.
The latest evolutionary stage of the modular transverse matrix platform, known as MQB evo, forms the high-tech basis of the ninth Passat generation. This platform allows Volkswagen to democratize innovations by sharing development costs across all MQB product lines, making new systems available to a wide range of drivers.
The new Passat Variant is designed to be an electric vehicle for everyday life, especially in Germany where 95% of all car journeys are shorter than 50 km and 99% are shorter than 100 km. The efficient combination of an electric drive motor and new turbocharged petrol engine ensures overall ranges of around 1,000 km.
Volkswagen has paid special attention to the interior, focusing on high-quality materials, pleasant haptics, and the operability of all elements. The high seating comfort and low level of noise while driving make the Passat Variant an ideal touring and business vehicle.
The vehicle will also feature convenience systems derived from the Touareg, such as new massage seats, making it an all-rounder for various needs. With the new generation of its bestseller, Volkswagen aims to offer a vehicle where the higher class boundary no longer applies, essentially elevating the Passat to a new level of luxury and functionality.
