Saturday morning in the summer would normally have been Malcolm’s trip to Craigtoun Park for the St Andrews parkrun. This week, though, Fife Athletic Club was running their Tour of Fife race series. This consists of five races in five days, each race being a different discipline.
It would clearly be silly to run a 5k parkrun just a few hours before a “proper” 5k race. But he had signed up as a volunteer. And if he was making the trip to St Andrews, he might as well do the run!
The time? 26:32 compared to 29:46 the last time. He was placed 73rd from 186 finishers, and third in his age category.
With the run over, the finish tokens sorted into number order for next week, it was time to head to Glenrothes for the Tour of Fife 5k Road Race!

--------------------------------
Malcolm lives in the east of Scotland, near Edinburgh and St Andrews. He’s in his sixties now. He used to run in his twenties but gave it up when his family came along. Thirty years later, he had lost his fitness, gained a lot of weight and was on medication for high blood pressure. Deciding to take control again, he started to count his calories, and picked up the running bug again.
He has been a run leader since 2014 and has helped well over 200 beginners to get active. He qualified as a UK Athletics coach in 2016. He also helps organise Falkland Trail Runners. If all that wasn’t enough of a challenge, he decided that he would celebrate turning 60 years of age by running his first ever marathon! He has done other marathons and half marathons since, but continues to do more and to look for proven ways he and other older runners can improve their running.

• heart rate, lactate level and other factors for endurance running
• effective warmup and cool down regimes for older people
• running economy and using active recovery to run farther with less effort
• avoiding injury with proper running form
These are explained from a perspective of practical experience and personal research. With luck, the channel will also include contributions from sports scientists and health professionals with an understanding of exercise in later years.
