Today's video is all about winter damage, gardening with climate change and creating a exotic garden that is both resilient to extreme weather but exciting as well! I talk about the effects of the winter freezes on my palms, tree ferns and tender plants and how designing a garden with a base structure of hardy exotic plants like Trachycarpus windmill palms and bamboo is the best way of building a UK tropical, exotic or jungle garden to cope with these colder winter spells. I discuss 'right plant right place', microclimates, soil amendments and preparing for winter protection are key for slightly less hardy structural plants like feather palms and Dicksonia antartica tree ferns. For tender plants I talk about how it's important to be realistic and understand the limits of your plants. For some this reveals the need to be proactive and either digging them up or growing in pots so they can be protected from hard frosts and winter freezes, for others I think it's more of a mindset shift to accepting that certain plants are a gamble and enjoying the challenge of growing the unusual whilst not beating yourself up if you do have winter losses.
There's more videos coming up later this year on practical tips to make your garden more resilient to droughts and winter cold along with detailed looks at the tough plants I'd recommend for a lower maintenance and more sustainable exotic garden but I wanted to give you a few example plant suggestions below (that I didn't have time to fit in the video!) - these are tough plants that haven't taken damage here and have coped well with the conditions and weather challenges in my North Lincolnshire garden:
Tough exotic style plants for drier areas, exposed or sunny gardens with well drained soil:
Chamaerops humilis ('Cerifera' & 'Vulcano' are especially cool')
Jubaea chilensis
Yucca linearis
Yucca rostrata
Yucca gloriosa
Agave montana, parryi & ovatifolia
Phormiums (more plain forms are generally hardier)
Euphorbia x pasteurii 'John Phillips' (but there's loads of great options)
Pseudopanax varieties
Eucalyptus (some of the snow gums are very cool and hardy)
Cordylines (they have their limits but australis should sail through most winters)
Accessorise with Sedums, Hylotelephiums, grasses etc.
Plants that may need more moisture, shade & shelter but are generally tough with correct planting and a bit more summer water:
Trachycarpus windmill palms
Fatsia japonica and various forms
Schefflera rhododendrifolia (& maybe taiwaniana)
Gunnera manicata / tinctoria (ideally in a damper spot)
Bamboos - for clumpers I'd usually recommend Fargesia robusta campbell but I'm trialling some more unusual varieties here, for runners with a bit more space I'd go for Phyllostachys vivax 'Aureocaulis' etc, P. aureosulcata 'Spectablis' & 'Aureocaulis', P. parvifolia & P. atrovaginata
Ground ferns - check out my other vids for ideas!
Miscanthus grasses (grow bigger with a bit more water but undemanding and prefer sun)
Mahonia 'Soft Caress'
