It is one of the most depressing realities that, of the (I estimate) approximately 800-1000 official German military productions made between February 1917 and November 1918, only about 100 still exist, some in fragmented form. Through my research, I may have been able to double this number, with an extremely optimistic estimate suggesting that a quarter of the films may still exist. I have gathered censorship cards and several descriptions from the Reichsfilmarchiv from the 1920s and 1930s, and even discovered descriptions of some films that were destroyed. I can tell you, you do not want to know what was lost when the Reichsfilmarchiv was bombed in 1945. Everything from educational films showing how to destroy tanks in battle to frontline trench films. I hope to find more of this official German footage for To Hell and Back Film, but as I have already reviewed most of the WWI footage currently in existence, I believe we are nearing the end of the research. It is truly tragic. However, I am committed to delivering an unforgettable film sometime in late 2025, featuring many of the most interesting parts of the surviving films. Fortunately, there were also many other film companies that worked for the German government during the war, such as Messterfilm GmbH, Berlin. I believe I have been able to find 25% of the films that were once shot, which is definitely better than the BuFA films, of which I think only 15% may still exist.
