What is skin cancer?
🔑MOST COMMON SKIN CANCERS:🔑
1) Melanoma
2) Non-melanoma — basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinomas
📕Basal cell skin cancer
- Most common type of skin cancer
- Usually appears as a shiny pink, pearly bump on sun exposed sites
- Usually not aggressive
📗 Squamous cell skin cancer
- Very common, close second to basal cell carcinoma
- Usually appears as scaly pink growth on sun exposed sites; can also occur in the mouth and genital region from HPV
- Usually not aggressive, but more aggressive than basal cell carcinoma
📘Melanoma
- Not as common as the other two, but more aggressive (likely to spread to other organs) and best to catch early
- Usually presents as a very dark mole that stands out from the other moles
- Most common location is the back on men and the legs on women but can occur anywhere
📙Precancers (actinic keratosis)
- Most hang out and do nothing, but 10% can progress to squamous cell carcinoma
- Starts off as a rough patch or scaly spot that doesn’t go away
📒Atypical moles
- Very common, usually diagnosed with a skin biopsy
- Having atypical moles is a risk factor for developing melanomas in the future so we recommend getting regular skin checks
