Generalised vitiligo appears bilaterally, focal vitiligo in patches, segmental vitiligo unilaterally (congenital), and universal vitiligo affects the entire body. Vitiligo has various genetic causes. Initially, the condition is assessed as stable or unstable. Unstable vitiligo requires medical intervention to halt progression, while stable vitiligo can be treated with topical therapies, oral drugs, and laser/UV light therapies (eczema lasers, PUVA units).
Topical therapies and photofirst cream are used for stable cases, while oral therapies are the first line for unstable vitiligo. Untreated hypopigmentation (PIH) may worsen, but vitiligo can be managed and potentially cured.
