Ukrainian PM’s response
came after a Russian ultimatum
to the armed forces stationed
at the steel plant in Mariupol.
Russia claimed
it has controlled Mariupol
the strategic port city
on the Azov Sea.
Its offer, made "out of
purely humane principles",
demand Ukrainian forces
still fighting in the city
until 6 a.m. Moscow time (11 p.m. ET)
to surrender.
The Russian military
has urged foreign mercenaries to
stay clear of Ukraine
earlier in March, advising them to
"think seven times before going"
Capturing Mariupol would allow
Russian forces fully link up with
troops in the Donbas region.
If it falls, it would be the
first major city to be taken
by Russian forces since Feb. 24
