In this edition of the Center for Latinx Digital Media's Virtual Seminar Series, Prof. Camilla Fojas (Arizona State University) presented "Surveillance Cultures on the US-Mexico Border." The event was moderated by Facundo Suenzo, a Ph.D. student at Northwestern University and coordinator of the Center.
Presentation abstract: The US-Mexico border is one of the most visualized spaces in the US. As a place of continual crisis, permanent visibility, and territorial defense, the border is rendered as a layered visual space of policing―one that is seen from watchtowers, camera-mounted vehicles, helicopters, surveillance balloons, radar systems, unmanned aerial vehicles, and live streaming websites. I explore the visual codes of the surveillance imaginary of the US security state along with forms of cultural resistance.
