(12 Jun 2014) Football fans crowded around screens large and small across Rio de Janeiro on Thursday evening as the host nation Brazil faced Croatia in the opening match of the FIFA World Cup.
Demonstrators protesting against the tournament joined hoards of fans outside the Fan Fest zone on Copacabana beach, where the match was being shown on a giant screen.
Brazilian fans at the city's affluent Jockey Club were in a party mood to cheer on their national team.
Meanwhile up on the hillside in the Santa Marta favela, fans groaned in dismay as Brazil scored an own goal to give Croatia a 1 nil lead in the 11th minute.
However there were scenes of raucous celebration just 18 minutes later when Neymar got the equaliser in the 29th minute.
The final score was 3 - 1 to Brazil, their next match is against Mexico in Fortaleza on Tuesday.
