As the world marks the International Safe Abortion Day we look at how abortion is strictly prohibited in many African countries. The day has been criticized by many pro-lifers and conservative religious organization. This makes it hard for many women to have safe abortion procedures. In Kenya women and girls turn to back alley quacks who carry out unsafe abortions and risk their lives. Human right groups estimate that each day seven women die due to unsafe abortion. DW’s Mariel Müller in Nairobi met a young woman in the Mathare slum who survived an unsafe abortion and even managed to interview the man who carried it out.
