DescriptionTwo years ago, Cole was approved for a life changing procedure called a Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy by Dr. T.S. Park at St. Louis Children's Hospital. In short, SDR surgery is an irreversible procedure that treats muscle spasticity caused by abnormal communication among the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles. Spasticity most commonly affects patients who have cerebral palsy. Prior to this procedure being done, there was a lot of questioning and concern. Especially when so young, having your child sedated knowing it is for an intense surgical procedure is extremely scary. Thankfully the doctor who performed the procedure is known to be the best in the world. In the end, the procedure was a success. I put together a video a year ago titled "Coles Journey to SDR" which shows pre and post surgery development. Without continuous and ongoing physical therapy, the positive effects of the procedure could be lost. Treating Cerebral Palsy is very complex, and there is no cure. Each individual is affected differently. Although the brain injury that causes Cerebral Palsy cannot be healed, the resulting physical impairment can be managed with a wide range of treatments and therapies. This is Coles Journey to SDR...
