NASA's Parker Solar Probe, also known as the "Mission to Touch the Sun," is a robotic spacecraft launched in August 2018 with the aim of studying the Sun's outer atmosphere, known as the corona, and its solar wind. The mission is named after Eugene Parker, the physicist who first proposed the existence of solar wind in the 1950s.
The spacecraft is equipped with a suite of scientific instruments that allow it to measure the magnetic and electric fields, plasma waves, and particles around the Sun. It is also protected by a specially designed heat shield made of carbon composite materials, which can withstand temperatures of up to 1,400 degrees Celsius (2,552 degrees Fahrenheit).
Over the course of its seven-year mission, the Parker Solar Probe will make a total of 24 close approaches to the Sun, coming as close as 3.83 million miles (6.16 million kilometers) from its surface
