Before Nain started producing rugs, high-end wool clothing were made in the city. At the beginning of the 20th century, they began to look toward rug manufacturing.
Nain Persian rugs are famous for their cream and blue colors and their use of silk highlights and high knot density. A lot of their designs were influenced by Isfahan rugs thus their similarities in colors and knot density. Over time Nain rug weavers developed their own versions.
Pile is usually made of wool, wool and silk while the foundation is made of cotton. Knot density goes between 300-700 KPSI and sometimes higher. Silk is used as highlights throughout the design.
Knot density in Nain rugs is described using the Persian word 'LAA' which means layers. The lower the 'LAA' number, the higher the knot density. A Nain rug with an LAA of 4 is considered to be the best.
The designs usually have floral patterns, curvilinear with intricate flowers, allover, and medallion patterns. Shah Abbasi designs are also used. Another motif used in Nain rugs is the Islimi motif, which is made up of multiple star medallions. Animal motifs are also used.
The famous Habibian workshop came from Nain. Fatollah Habibian established one of the most renowned Nain rug-making workshops. He is a well-known and highly revered Nain master weaver and is widely regarded as the ‘Father of Nain rugs’.
