Positive affirmations work best when they play to our identity and core values, and we are able to FEEL them to be true. For instance, when we affirm, “I am a nice person” it’s not being big-headed, it’s simply reminding us of the person we desire to be, we then act accordingly, and the actions affirm our positive self-view – over time changing the habitual pathways into new, positive ones. Self-affirmation Theory is widely supported by the scientific community, and there have been several empirical studies to support its effectiveness.
