When breast cancer is caught early, the survival rate is nearly 100%. According to the American Cancer Society, the five-year relative survival rate of women with localized stage of breast cancer 99%. University Hospitals' Chair of the Deparment of Radiology, Dr. Donna Plecha, explains the importance of early detection of breast cancer and the process of getting a mammogram. A baseline (first) mammogram is recommended for women when they reach the age of 40, regardless of their risk factors, followed by annual screening mammograms every year thereafter.
