How can SMEs create social impact while contributing to the circular economy? 👥 🔄
Meet Atelierul de pânză (ADP) – a Romanian social enterprise in the NESsT Portfolio. ADP was born from a mission to find environmentally friendly alternatives to plastic bags and give people with disabilities – almost 90% of whom face unemployment in Romania – dignified job opportunities.
Advocates of the circular economy, ADP saw an opportunity to use textile scraps as raw material in its production processes to create a sustainable range of upcycled bags and 100% cotton products.
What other ways is ADP generating integrated impact?
👉🏼 Today, ADP supplies from 11 such producers, supporting 82 individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds.
👉🏼 ADP is also committed to supporting customers to make conscious and informed purchasing choices by sharing the social and environmental benefits of all the products on its website.
👉🏼 All profits from Atelierul de pânză are reinvested into other social projects run by the founding organization. These include afforestation projects that have planted 1,122,000 m2 of forest in 14 communities in Romania 🌲 🌳, and recycling services and education programs that have trained more than 3,000 high school students 👥♻.

Atelierul de pânză joined the NESsT - IKEA Social Entrepreneurship CEE Accelerator in 2021. With NESsT and IKEA Social Entrepreneurship’s support, Atelierul de pânză has launched an online shop platform that promotes and sells sustainable products – all of which are made by small marginalized producers or organizations working with excluded groups in Romania (we share the link in comments)
