Identifies and describes a career as a Boat Builder or Shipwright. Boat Builders and Shipwrights construct and repair ships and boats of all kinds. They use a range of materials including metal, wood, aluminum, fiberglass and plastic. Boat Builders and Shipwrights do their job by working from designs. Extensive career training is required as many ship builders have college engineering degrees. Some ship builders, who work on a smaller job, may learn their skills on the job, or in career schools. Many of the boat building jobs are located in waterfront ship yards, repair sections of ports, or in small boat yards and marinas; usually working for building and repair firms. To perform well in this job, you must be good at working with your hands and feel comfortable using hazardous equipment.
