The 33-year-old was widely criticised for his summer transfer after moving to a country where homosexuality is criminalised, despite previously being a high-profile supporter of the LGBTQ+ community. He was booed while playing for England in October, with many calling him a hypocrite.
The former Liverpool player has joined Ajax on a 2½-year deal, having torn up his contract with Al-Ettifaq at the start of the week after only six months with the club.
