In this video, Doug takes a look at a gorgeous Italian Cello made by Matteo Mazzotti in 2018, Piacenza, Italy. Mazzotti learned the craft of violin-making while attending the Istituto Liutario ‘A Stradivari’ in Cremona and undertook private lessons with various master luthiers in Italy. In 2000 he received his degree as ‘Maestro Liutaio’ with full marks. After working with Master Massimo Negroni to improve his knowledge of the classic Cremonese style of violin-making he opened his own workshop in Piacenza. This cello comes with a beautiful certificate of authenticity in the form of a book with high-quality photos and a description of the instrument and it’s parts from the maker.
This cello is labelled ‘Matteo Mazzotti Cremonensis, fece in Piacenza, Anno 2019,’ with the makers signature and brand stamped directly to the right of the label. The body measures 750mm along the back, 348mm across the upper bouts and 443mm across the lower bouts. The back is made from two pieces of highly flamed maple. The top is made from spruce with a straight grain. This instrument has been antiqued and has a good cover of orange-brown varnish.
Overall this cello has a bright, powerful and classic Italian sound. It has superior projection and an outstanding response time. The upper and lower registers are beautifully balanced with a clear and focused tone. This instrument would be suitable for tertiary level study and the advancing to professional soloist or chamber musician. This cello is currently fitted with Larsen Magnacore strings to add a touch of richness to the overall brilliance of this instrument.
