Have you ever asked if you have built the right fundraising team?
I've seen many nonprofits give passionate employees fundraising titles frankly because they didn't know where else to put them.
If you want a world-class fundraising team, there is much that can be borrowed from a world-class sales team.
^ I wish I knew this when I was building my nonprofits.
Here are two simple truths:
1. A good sales rep truly knows how to use their CRM. They can run their own pipeline reports and truly understand what stage each of their prospects is in with a solid closing plan for each.
^ This is a struggle for many fundraisers I've worked with. They think their CRM is for entry-level employees and they tend not to use it to manage their portfolio.
2. A good sales rep never tries to close a deal too early. This can force the buyer to make a decision before truly vetting whether or not the product solves their problems.
^ I can't tell you how many times I've been "pitched" by a fundraiser at the first meeting. Just like a buying prospect should be the one to ask for the proposal, the donor prospect should give permission to be pitched.
As you build a world-class fundraising team, don't be afraid to look at other industries for help.
