Faulty Turbocharger Results In Severe Power Loss From The Engine

We had this 2006 Toyota Innova, having covered an overall mileage distance of 165k kilometres, visit one of our MotoFyx car repair workshop for an annual service along with a concern relating to a significant drop in engine performance being noticed. The car was predominantly used for long distance travel and the sudden drop in engine performance made it difficult to drive the car along highways. Seeking a permanent solution in order to restore the car’s engine performance, the car owner reached out to us for immediate assistance.

Upon a detailed inspection of the car by our expert technicians, there was heavy oil leakage being observed from the turbocharger and the impeller blade had developed significant play, thereby creating a whining noise. There was heavy carbon deposition further observed. The turbocharger assembly was old and corroded, hence repair of the existing turbocharger wasn’t viable, hence a replacement of the turbocharger was suggested.

*Function of the turbocharger:
- Turbocharger is one of the finest inventions, that had led to great efficiency observed in Diesel engines. The function of the turbocharger is to draw the exhaust gas from the engine, which in turn runs the turbine connected through the shaft. This then pushes high pressure low velocity air in the combustion chamber burning excess air - fuel mixture, resulting in greater power output and increased torque

*Symptoms of a faulty turbocharger:
- Power loss
- Whining noise
- Excess smoke from exhaust
- Check engine light
- Damaged seals

*Solution:
- The silencer and exhaust manifold were dismantled
- Faulty turbocharger assembly was removed
- Carbon deposition was cleaned
- New turbocharger assembly was installed
- Annual service was performed
