The transport and logistics industry is facing major changes: growth in e-commerce, digitalisation of logistics, the revolutionary industry 4.0. The challenges are enormous but prospects are, as well. Logistics as leader and as follower.
Dorothea von Boxberg, Lufthansa:
„We actually see ourselves as facilitators. Someone wants to transport something. Whether it's roses from Kenya, vaccines from India or automobile parts from Munich our aim is to bring them where they are needed. And are we designers? Yes, I think very much so on the digital side where we are changing a very manual and paper based industry intro a digital one.“
Uwe Brinks, DHL:
„We always see ourselves as the motor of global trade. A lot is possible but nothing is possible without logistics.“
For four days Munich is the hub of global logistics. Key players meet at the Transport Logistic 2019 the leading trade fair for logistics, mobility, the IT and supply chain management.
Stefan Rummel, Managing Director Messe München:
„We have a record transport logistic with around 2,380 exhibitors. We had to open an extra hall. And we are even more international. Roughly 56% of the exhibitors are international ones, so we have increased by about 3%.“
The top issues are what concerns the industry: the key word is Silk Road. To be exact, the number of Chinese exhibitors has doubled. Politics also has the goods traffic with the Far East on its agenda.
Andreas Scheuer, Federal Minister of Transport and Digital Infrastructure:
„Actually, we can see very different tendencies across the world. Discussions about custom duties, about isolation. Germany has always used routes and we are in contact with the Chinese. There are strong national interests on China's side. But we are using routes that offer more opportunities. But all routes lead to markets and for Germany as world champion in export, logistics and travelling these are crucial.“
Above all the industry can see the opportunities and has done for years...
Uwe Brinks, DHL:
“Whenever new trade routes are developed and that can be seen in the history of man and in the history of logistics, then things progressed and that was good for our industry and the whole economy“.
Commercial treaties, customs, embargoes - the industry wants, above all to be level headed in difficult times.
Uwe Brinks, DHL:
„It's definitely an additional challenge. That means depending on what additional formalities and barriers we are faced with logistics will become more demanding. But that also offers opportunities. For example more customs duties is a very lucrative business and we as Digital Freight are also involved in that.”
Brexit is THE uncertain factor for the industry. Nobody knows what Britain's leaving will do and when that will be.
Dorothea von Boxberg, Lufthansa:
“Yes, BREXIT is terrible for all countries in Europe. It can't get better. Great Britain is currently the fifth largest trade partner for Germanyand other European countries also have strong links. A single market without taxes, without trade limitations is difficult to envisage. And it can only get worse.“
Innovative products and technologies are needed more than ever to bring people, markets and goods to each other more efficiently and more sustainably.
