According to Bauman, in the age we live in, everything is in a state of flux: our identities, our relationships, even our moral values are not fixed. And why is this? Because modernity has replaced the “rigid” structures through which people make sense of their lives with a world based on flexibility and uncertainty. Analyzing the concept of “consumer society” in depth in today's rapidly changing world, Bauman argues that individuals are now defined only by their consumption habits and that these habits make even our relationships superficial.
