"The act on the retribution of Jewish property, the Jewish communal property is now being implemented, has been implemented for some time and we want to assure that all founded claims are met. I'm also very happy that Jewish institutions, Jewish foundations with their representatives of international circles is also starting to operate in Poland."

"I think we're looking at legislation that would provide some kind of restitution and perhaps some kind of compensation where restitution is not possible and one that's fair for survivors and their heirs regardless of whether they live in Poland or outside Poland because that has been one of the major sticking points before. His commitment to appoint a special representative which he did today to address concerns about this issue, I think is also a very important step forward."

STORYLINE:
Polish Prime Minister Leszek Miller began an official two-day visit to the United States in New York on Thursday.
After a morning meeting with Polish-American media representatives Miller visited Ground Zero, the site of the collapsed World Trade Center towers, to pay tribute to the victims of the September 11 terrorist attack.
During his tour Miller was accompanied by Julian Dwornik, a Polish-American policeman who had taken part in rescue work after the attacks.
Miller then departed for talks with U-N Secretary General Kofi Annan at the United Nations headquarters building.
Miller told journalists after the meeting that the U-N Secretary had informed him about current and future UN aid to Afghanistan and wished Poland prompt membership in the E-U.
Later in the day he spoke to representatives a t a conference for Presidents of Major American Jewish Organisations regarding the restitution of Jewish property to Holocaust victims.
The Polish Prime Minister is expected to be in Washington DC on Friday where he is scheduled to meet with U-S President George W Bush, Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and C-I-A head George Tenet.
The talks are expected to center on the security in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks, the functioning of the anti-terrorist coalition, Polish-U-S relations and Poland's possible purchase of F-16 fighter planes from the U-S.
