Oznur Cure Girdi wins gold at Paris 2024 Paralympics after breaking the world record in para archery's ranking round.
Turkish archer Oznur Cure Girdi secured her first Paralympic gold medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, defeating Iran's Fatemeh Hemmati 144-141 in the compound women's final. Cure Girdi, 26, broke the world record during the ranking round, surpassing 700 points, and maintained her dominance throughout the elimination rounds.
The final match saw Cure Girdi tie with Hemmati in the first end, but her consistent 10s and 9s gave her a three-point lead before the last end, which she held onto to claim the gold. "I believed in the medal already after the ranking round and my world record," she said. After her victory, Cure Girdi celebrated emotionally, crediting her success to rigorous training, including psychological preparation. "I'm happy I could handle the pressure," she added.
Silver went to Hemmati, while British archer Jodie Grinham claimed bronze after defeating her teammate, defending champion Phoebe Paterson Pine, in a dramatic match. Grinham, who is 6.5 months pregnant, expressed her determination to compete in future Paralympic Games. "I knew going into that last end that I needed to produce good shots," she said, reflecting on her win.
The competition continues in Paris with W1 and compound men's events.
