A Dutchman working for a Swiss aid group has been found stabbed to death in his Beirut apartment.
Police have declined to speculate on a motive for the murder of 53-year-old Fritz Valkenburg.
Police sped to the seaside Ras Beirut district after the body of the Dutchman was found on the floor of his apartment.
Investigators said 53-year-old Fritz Valkenburg had been stabbed nine times in the neck and back, probably with a screwdriver.
Some reports suggested the victim had been dead for about 36 hours.
His wallet was found on the floor, empty.
But police declined to speculate on a motive for the slaying.
Valkenburg had lived in Beirut for the last four years.
He had been working for the Swiss organisation Terre des Hommes.
Officials at the group declined comment.
