Relatively close to the Costa Rican capital of San José, you have several location that could be of interest as day trips. In this video I take in the Irazú Volcano, Orosí valley and the Lankester Botanical Garden in one day.

The active Irazú Volcano gets its name from the indigenous word for “thunder.” As the highest mountain in the Cordillera Central, Irazú reaches an elevation of 3,432 metres, and is a popular ascent for tourists, as its cone offers views of both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of Costa Rica on rare clear days. The active crater is 1,050 metres in diameter and 300 metres deep. Irazú Volcano National Park is linked by paved road to Cartago. The volcano is at least 854,000 years old, and its recent active phase started 136,000 years ago and continues still today. Irazú's most famous eruption began in March 1963, a few days before US President John F. Kennedy's visit to Costa Rica. The volcano’s eruptions of 1963–65 produced ash that dammed a nearby small river, flooding the city of Cartago and causing serious damage to coffee crops. The ashfall created considerable inconvenience for residents of San José, 54 km away.
The Orosí Valley, located in the Cartago province, reaches between the hillside of the Irazú Volcano and the mass of trees of the cloud forest found in the Tapantí-Macizo de la Muerte National Park. This is a beautiful spot in the Central Valley, with stunning landscapes, ruins of the first church in Costa Rica - Nuestra Señora de la Limpia Concepción del Rescate de Ujarrás and fincas with nice restaurants. The ruins of one of the oldest churches in Costa Rica is located in Ujarrás, the church of "Nuestra Señora de la Limpia Concepción del Rescate de Ujarrás", which was built in colonial times between 1686 and 1693. In 1833, the village was subject to a devastating flood which led to the government passing a decree to move the village to a safer place. The town was located in one of the poorest regions of the Spanish empire, which lacked economic resources to sustain its population. The climate of the place was also adverse and diseases played havoc with the local population.
The Lankester Botanical Garden are a set of gardens outside of Cartago, Costa Rica. The garden is open to the public, but is operated by the University of Costa Rica (UCR) as a research center and is a major center for orchid research in both Central America and the Caribbean. After some previous times in Costa Rica from 1900 onwards, Charles H. Lankester moved from England to Costa Rica in 1910, and around the same time began collecting orchids. In 1924, he bought a coffee farm, known as Las Cóncavas from Francisco Quesada near Cartago, Costa Rica. On the farm was a large lagoon which attracted migratory birds. Near the lagoon, Lankester created an area which he called El Silvestre (uncultivated), which was reserved for orchids and other tropical plants. In 1955, he sold the rest of the farm, retaining only El Silvestre. When Lankester died in 1969, his daughter Dorothy inherited the property. In 1973, Dorothy sold the farm to the University of Costa Rica on the condition that it would be retained as a botanical garden.
