DAYTON -- Robin Harvey does most of her shopping on her debit card. When we asked her how often she checks her statements she said, next to never. But that's the best way to know if you've been a victim of the latest scam.See a $9.84 Charge on Your Credit Card Bill? That means someone has your card info according to The Better Business Bureau. The BBB is warning consumers to look on their credit card statements for a charge of $9.84. If you have the charge, the BBB believes scammers have gotten ahold of your credit card numbers. They know not everyone is going to fall for these scams but they know if they get enough people they will make a lot of money, said John North of the Dayton BBB.Hundreds of consumers nationwide have complained in online forums and to the BBB about seeing the unauthorized charges on their credit and debit card accounts. They've hit several consumers across the country and so far, no one knows how the scammers obtained the credit card information.Often, the company will be EETSAC.COM. The website claims to offer customer support, but there are no links to any services. The site just promises full refunds to customers, stating, If for some reason you are not fully satisfied we will refund 100% of your last payment. We called them and found out they are an online income company that charges you $9.84 to sign up.They make smaller charges which often go unnoticed, but they add up: a $10 charge on a million accounts is $10 million. If it happened to you, contact your bank immediately, report the charge, ask that it be removed, have the card canceled, and request a new card. One way that I do know is I check my balance, said Harvey. I don't exactly check what I purchase but I check what I spend and if it's more that what I spent then I know it's not right. You can also place a fraud alert with one of the credit reporting bureaus so if some kind fraudulent charge happens you have to approve it, said North. The local BBB says they haven't received any calls yet, but know once the public sees our story, the calls may start coming in.We know that once it hits any area of the U.S., Dayton and Ohio are soon to follow, said North. The other thing that happens when people know to look out for the $9.84 charge, the scammers will change the amount to another number. So when you check your statement tonight, don't skip past any random charges for any amount.Connect with ABC 22/FOX 45 Reporter Wale Aliyu on Facebook and Twitter.
