Out of all the places I have visited so far on this journey, nothing comes close to the sorrow and sadness I feel in pig factory farms. These places are where the vast majority of bacon, sausages etc come from and are home to some of the most helpless animals I have witnessed.
I managed to shoot this super quick video on a recent trip to a pig farm in the UK to show you a glimpse of what’s inside.
What you will see here is a mother pig in a farrowing crate. These crates provide enough room for her to stand up and lie down and maybe take one or two steps forward or backwards. She is unable to turn around and will face the wall while her piglets suckle from her. She will be in this crate for around a month at a time to wean her piglets and this will be repeated again approx every 5 months. This is the reality of UK pig farms. Around 60% of all mother pigs in the UK are in these crates.
For these animals, this is pure hell. Stuck in a dirty shed, between bars with no way to move and If one of her piglet’s becomes ill or needs help, she can’t even reach them to help. This is no way to treat someone.
When we live in a world where we can so easily avoid animal products, why should we let practices like this continue? If we have a choice that avoids using animals at all, shouldn’t we take it?
