🧡🪶Orange Shirt Day was started by the brave Indigenous woman and Residential School Survivor, Phyllis Webstad from Stswecem’c Xgat’tem First Nation. At the age of 6, she was taken away from her family and community and forced into St. Joseph’s Mission Residential “School.” Her Grandmother bought her an orange shirt for her on her first day at this ‘school.’ The moment she arrived, Phyllis’s belongings and clothes were taken away from her, including her Orange Shirt, which she never saw again. This is why we title today’s Truth and Reconciliation Day “Orange Shirt Day,” because the color orange reminded her of the experiences she and other Indigenous children went through.
We will never forget…because #everychildmatters
