Opioid pain medications have been abused, in part, because they are over-prescribed. But as AEI'S Sally Satel explains, the indiscriminate efforts to control prescribing is making life miserable for a group of people that needs these drugs to manage intense, chronic pain.
Sally Satel, MD, is a practicing psychiatrist and a lecturer at the Yale University School of Medicine. As a Resident Scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, she studies mental health and domestic drug policy, as well as political trends in medicine. The author or co-author of several books, her most recent one, “Brainwashed: The Seductive Appeal of Mindless Neuroscience,” co-authored with Scott Lilienfeld, was a 2014 finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize in Science.
