Lerchen Zhong - Fantasie Impromptu, Op. 66 (Frédéric Chopin)
Lerchen Zhong is the Novice Runner-Up for the CDCYM's 17th Annual Chopin Piano Competition. On Saturday, September 15, 2018, 29 contestants ages 6-19 living or studying within 50 miles of the New York Capital Region competed in three different categories (Novice, Apprentice, and Master) in front of esteemed judges, Fideliz Campbell and Kim Paterson from Hartwick College. The following afternoon, the winners and runners-up performed their winning pieces as part of the Winners' Concert in Latham, NY.
The Chopin Novice winner is awarded $100; the Chopin Apprentice level winner, $500; and the Chopin Master level winner, $1000. Runners-up receive $50, $100, and $250, respectively with a third optional award of $100 added for the the Apprentice Level called the Chopin Apprentice Mazurka Award and a $200 award added for the Chopin Master called the Chopin Master Etude Award given at the judges' discretion.
All contestants are required to perform one Chopin piece of their choice.
Apprentice contestants are required to perform an additional Mazurka from a list of approved pieces
Master contestants must be at least 13 years old and are required to perform an additional Etude from either Op. 10 or Op. 25 (Excluding Op. 10, No. 3 and Op. 25, No. 7). The age requirement can be waived if student has won first place in the Apprentice Level and is competent to compete in the Master Level.
