The battle of Spotsylvania Court House, fought May 8th through May 20th, was the 3rd bloodiest battle of the American Civil War, as well as showing the grim realities of a new type of warfare. Fought during the overland campaign, the battle was the second confrontation between Union general Ulysses S Grant and Confederate general Robert E Lee. The Battle of Spotsylvania presented a new style of warfare that would characterize the next several months of fighting in Virginia.
