Plot: As she is tried before the Revolutionary Tribunal, Charlotte Corday refuses to be sorry for the killing of Marat.
Historical Context: Charlotte Corday was a Girondin sympathizer who believed that killing the radical Jacobin revolutionary, Jean-Paul Marat, would bring peace to France. Marat was responsible for spurring the violence and executions of thousands of aristocrats, which the Girondins took to horror. On July 13th, 1793, Corday took a cordial visit to Marat, who was soaking in his bathtub, before stabbing him in the chest and assassinating him. She was tried for her crime and executed on July 17th, 1793. She was 24 years old. Despite her efforts, Marat was memorialized as a martyr and had a painting dedicated to him.
