On his debut album, When Smoke Rises, Mustafa contemplates the cycle of murder, grief and loss that he and his community have experienced in recent years. But the poet and musician has always been passionate about his community of Regent Park in downtown Toronto. With the release of his new record, Mustafa found a huge international audience and won alternative album of the year at the 2022 Juno Awards. He dropped by the Q studio for a rare in-depth conversation with Tom Power about his debut project, his breakout year and his journey from writing poetry as a kid to writing songs that reach millions around the world.
