EU officials will quiz their American counterparts over a surveillance and spying scandal later this week.
The European Commission says it has concerns over the important of the US PRISM programme on citizens privacy.
"We will seek more details from our American counterparts now at the EU-US Ministerial meeting in Dublin on Thursday and Friday," said Mina Andreeva, a Commission spokeswoman.
She added: "Data protection will not be part of the free trade agreement negotiation, we have a separate channel for negotiation a data protection agreement with United States"
MEPs reacted furiously and said that it was time to reassess how much data is shared with US authorities.
But Privacy campaigners argue MEPs and EU leaders have long been too soft on data protection.
Joe MacNamee, Executive Director of "European Digital Rights, told euronews: "Instead of supporting and strengthening those rights both the European Parliament and the member states appear to be very keen on undermining and reducing the protection rather than strengthening them".
