Ninety-Mile Beach is the fabled strip of sand that stretches from Ahipara to Scott Point, five kilometres south of Cape Maria van Diemen. Truth be told, it is actually 88 kilometres long.
Even though it is called Ninety Mile Beach, the actual length of it is 88 kilometres which are equivalent of 55 miles only. So the reason behind this inconsistency is that first European settlers didn`t have any speedometers. They knew that their horses could travel only 30 miles a day.
I had a day bus tour to Cape Reinga with Great Sightings, it started at 7:10am from Paihia, and returned at 6:30pm. It included lunch break at Restaurant near Pukenui with sea views.
the following information from their website
"Journey to the very tip of the North Island in our purpose-built coach, travel along the sand-swept shore of Te Oneroa-a-Tōhe, Ninety Mile Beach and uncover a region of rich Māori tradition along the way on an unforgettable full-day tour. "
