Walk the steep and rugged terrain and treacherous path that leads up to Roopkund Lake in the valley of the dead - with bones and skulls dating back to the 12th century.
1300 year old bones and skulls lie scatted at this 16, 500 foot high altitude western Himalayan Roopkund lake in the shadow of Trishul peak. A rare aerial peek into this grisly sight in a beautiful but rough Himalayan ablation valley.
The Himalayan lake of Roopkund is the starting point for the onward trek to Hom Kund and Ronti Saddle that lies on a col between the mighty peaks of Nanda Ghunti and Trishul that lie along the outer rim of the Nanda Devi Sanctuary in the Garhwal Himalaya of Uttarakhand. The peaks show scant snow at the end of the autumn season just as winter is ready to set in, and the snow-line has climbed to the highest point just before winter snow brings the snowline all the way down once again...
The mists and clouds swirl up in post-monsoon cold dryness and add to the mystery of this legendary lake with skeletons and skulls.
Never before in recorded history has Roopkund lake been completely dry as in this October 2020 view. The post monsoon season has completely dried out the lake and the skulls and skeletons all sit on the rocky surface now, with no water to submerge them in...
A rare Himalayan pre-winter sneak peek at Nanda Ghunti, Ronti Saddle, Trishul and Shilasamudar (sea of rocks) in Uttarakhand's Garhwal Himalaya. Filmed in early October, our camera flies up to 17, 500 feet to capture this rare first-time-ever-seen sight of the fabulous mountains of the Nanda Devi Sanctuary.
The Roopkund - Homkund valleys and the axis of Roopkund-Junargali-Homkund-Shila samundar head further on to Ronti saddle through old moraine ridges via Junar gali col.
Nanda Ghunti is a 6,309-metre-high (20,699 ft) mountain in Garhwal, India. It lies on the outer rim of the Nanda Devi Sanctuary.
The mountain was first surveyed by T. G. Longstaff in 1907. Eric Shipton surveyed it from the west in 1931. The first serious attempt to reach the summit was made by B. R. Goodfellow and J. Buzzard (UK) in 1944. Finally, a Swiss team under André Roch made the first ascent in 1947 via the east ridge.
Roopkund (locally known as Mystery Lake or Skeletons Lake) is a high altitude glacial lake in the Uttarakhand state of India. It lies in the lap of Trishul massif. Located in the Himalayas, the area around the lake is uninhabited and is roughly at an altitude of 16,470 feet (5,020 m), surrounded by rock-strewn glaciers and snow-clad mountains. Roopkund is a popular trekking destination.
With a depth of about 3 metres, Roopkund is widely known for the hundreds of ancient human skeletons found at the edge of the lake. The human skeletal remains are visible at its bottom when the snow melts. Research generally points to a semi-legendary event where a group of people was killed in a sudden, violent hailstorm in the 9th century. Because of the human remains, the lake has been called Skeleton Lake in recent times.
