This will be a bite-by-bite music literacy course, geared towards amateur adult musicians, but appropriate for all ages. I hope these lessons will better-equip church choir members and music team volunteers to decode music scores so that they can more easily and confidently serve their church family.
Similar to learning to read English using a phonics methodology, we will begin by learning the ABCs of music reading (identifying, naming, defining music symbols). We will then work on learning to decode first rhythm, and then pitch, from a score.
I will be focused on building a strong foundation through step-by-step learning and plenty of review. I hope that this slow and steady rate of learning will allow us to develop a sense of ease and comfort with our reading skills as we progress. We will study and practice reading scores together as we progress, and I will be happy to answer any and all questions!
I will be using Jay Althouse’s Ready to Read Music as a spine for the beginning of our music literacy journey. I plan on posting a video lesson each Tuesday and Friday. Please subscribe if you would like to follow along as videos are released.
