Finding yourself in a relationship that "turns" is like waking up in a foreign land with a stranger in your bed. You feel confusion, embarrassment, vulnerability and unmistakable menace. Living through it day to day is like being in a maze with a monster. You're frightened all the time, but you know you can't show it. You fumble along trying to keep your wits about you because you know panic could be fatal. You search for reason, safety and understanding, but find none.
The farther into the experience you go, the darker and more dire things get and the more lost you become. Your mind and your heart are at odds. You lie awake at night, your head throbs and your heart pounds. Your mind tells you something is wrong. Your heart tells you to keep on. You loved this man, you vowed to be with him; but what has happened to him, why is he acting this way and what is he going to do next?
You could lie awake at night for the rest of your life and never make sense of it because it makes no sense—until you get the big picture. It is a picture of many things from long ago—of heredity so horrendous or parenting so evil, that it creates a pathology so extreme it affects successive generations.
Family violence, whether overt or covert, does irreparable harm. Abused baby boys grow up to be perpetrators, who do more or less what was done to them and/or what they witnessed. Abused baby girls mostly grow up to be victims having become habituated to mistreatment, although a miniscule percent defy their DNA and grow up to be perpetrators.
Beast. Brute. Demon. Devil. Evil. Fiend. Lunatic. Maniac. Monster. These are some of the words used to describe the nature of the men they once loved. In every case, this man seemed "too-good-to-be-true" before he began to unleash hell in their lives. This is the the psychopath, the "other."
The psychopath is mentally ill due to lack of normal brain function. When psychopathy was first studied in the 19th century it was described as "moral insanity" because the behavior of the afflicted was so immoral and unscrupulous. The top-tier hallmark of this condition presents as "lack of empathy" and the group of characteristics (Cluster B) that manifest in behavior is best described as a "lack of conscience."
Where the psychopath is present, harm is inevitable.
